MKWC Has a New Type III Fire Engine
Say hello to MKWC’s newest fire engine addition!
This Type III 4x4 engine has arrived at its new home in Orleans. It is in service and operational for community fire protection and prescribed burn support. It is a huge asset to the community and our collaborative prescribed fire program. With a 500 gallon tank capacity and a 300 gallon per minute independent pump it can serve as a pumping platform for prescribed fire implementation, as well as mobile attack during a wildfire scenario. This engine was donated to MKWC from Storrey County Fire Department in Nevada, where MKWC Fire and Fuels Program Director and Burn Boss Eric Darragh has family ties. Thank you Storrey County FD!
Previously MKWC and the Karuk Tribe both purchased smaller Type VI engines through a 2018 CALFIRE Forest Health grant. MKWC just received word that our $5 million 2021 CALFIRE Direct Awards grant was funded that includes funding for the Salmon RIver Restoration Council to purchase a Type VI engine, MKWC to purchase two 4x4 crew cab work trucks, and the Karuk Department of Natural Resources to purchase a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) with a slip-on unit for prescribed fire implementation and support. We are building our local capacity to both implement prescribed fire with local resources when the time is right, and also protect our communities from fast-moving extreme wildfires like the Slater Fire. MKWC is also contracting with local volunteer fire departments, like the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department, who have recently acquired a state-of-the-art 3,000 gallon tactical water tender, to ensure these departments have funds for equipment maintenance and repair. Together, we can create a better fire future!
