Weed Spotlight: Meadow Knapweed

Meadow Knapweed is an A-rated invasive in Oregon and is beginning to make inroads in California. As a relatively new arrival in the Mid Klamath subbasin, we have an excellent opportunity to establish control before it is too late.

A MKWC work crew has been working toward eradicating meadow knapweed in the Weitchpec area, on roadside easements, and private lands. Methods have included weed whacking, hoeing, hand pulling, digging, and the application of weed mats. Typically, a site is first worked with tools to eliminate the weed population. Next, weed mats are laid down to prevent re-establishment of the weed.

A meadow knapweed eradication project spans two years, so work will be

repeated in the following summer. Inventories and pre-treatment monitoring of Meadow Knapweed have been completed and will continue throughout the next year. As our work has progressed, we have noted a wider extent of this species than previously known. Continued and increased funding for eradication work will be imperative in the next few years to keep this weed from becoming permanently established.
