Hoopa Fish Fair

Students look over a watershed model at the Hoopa Fish Fair.

Originally conceived by students and teachers at Hoopa Elementary School in response to the 2002 Klamath River Fish Kill, the Fish Fair has become a popular district wide event with over 500 Klamath-Trinity students attending each year.

The purpose of the Fish Fair is to educate students and community members about our responsibility to be proactive stewards of our watersheds. There is a wide array of presentations by professionals dedicated to environmental awareness from tribal, federal, independent, and non-profit agencies that take part in this day of education and fun!

If you are interested in presenting at the 6th annual Hoopa Fish Fair to be held on June 6th 2008 at Hoopa Elementary School, please download the presenter form and send it to: Teresa Cyr, Fish Fair Coordinator, at tcyr@ktjusd.k12.ca.us

Salmon Relay Run

Orleans Student with Salmon baton

The Salmon Relay Run is a 214-mile relay event from the mouth of the Klamath River to Iron Gate Dam in honor of the Klamath River Salmon. The event aims to bring attention to the dwindling numbers of Spring Chinook salmon in the Klamath and advocates dam removal. This annual relay run was organized in response to the 2002 Fish Kill, which claimed the lives of over 68,000 salmon returning to spawn.

The organizers of this annual relay run, headed by Hoopa High School Students, hope to unite communities affected by the collapse of the Klamath and Trinity Rivers' fisheries by inviting them to participate in running a one to five mile section of the Salmon Relay. Runners in the event have included members of the Yurok, Hoopa Valley and Karuk Tribes, sport fisherman, environmentalists and local residents in the Klamath River Basin.
